| | woo hoo. homework-free three-day weekend. i just love those.
okay, so i can easily sum up what happened in the first act of The Merchant of Venice.
~scene one: antonio and bassanio are talking, some of their friends show up, they talk some more, friends leave, and bassanio asks antonio for money to get boats and go seek out portia, antonio agrees.
~scene two: portia and her (what i'll refer to as her) handmaiden (makes me think of queen amidala) are talking about boys. portia's dad is dead, but pre-arranged how portia would decide her husband. the potential husbands will pick one of three boxes, and if he picks the right one, he gets to wed portia. portia doesn't like any of the guys that want to marry her. she does hear that bassanio may be coming to seek her hand and confides to nerissa (the handmaiden) that she wouldn't mind marrying bassanio.
~scene three: bassanio is talking to shylock, a jewish moneylender. lots of argument over whether or not shylock should lend money to bassanio under antonio's name. antonio comes along to straighten everything out, promising that bassanio will pay back the money, and shylock finally agrees to lend 3000 ducats to bassanio for 3 months, even though he doesn't like either of the men.
hmm, my cousin's last name is ducat. imagine that, my cousin's last name is venetian currency. is anyone else confused as to why this is one of shakepeare's great plays? its kinda sad that i don't really have anything else to say. i get to spend tomorrow at the kankakee river valley regatta. yah, boat races. monday is labor day, so i'm obviously stuck seeing people from school all day at village park. yippee. well, that's it for me, i think. <--look, a parenthetical expression!! you gotta watch out, or those stupid little things just creep up everywhere. |
